St Nicholas Church Interior And Rev H W Turner

St Nicholas Church Interior And Rev H W Turner

Rev Herbert William Turner M.A. was rector of St Nicholas Church from July 1886 until his death in 1922, after ten years as Minister of Christchurch. He was immensley popular, described as a man with such magnetism that he drew men and women around him, his original sermons were always delivered to packed congregations. He was involved in much local charity work, such as setting up a committee of local tradesmen to provide dinners at the Shaftesbury coffee rooms during cold winter months for 2500 local poor children, in batches of 150. Here the rector and his committee served them with beef, vegetables and plum pudding. Revd Turner lived with his wife Ellen and nine children at The Rectory in West Street. Ellen died in 1897 after a long illness and in 1899 the Revd Turner married Miss Harriet Leete of Eversley, Grange Road. His beloved daughter Evelyn also died of diptheria in 1895 aged 19. There is a memorial window dedicated to her in St Nicholas church illustrating the life of St Faith.
