Harry Johnson was village postmaster for about 35 years in Ashtead, running the counter from the family printing and stationery business at 58 The Street, situated at the corner of Grove Road. His father founded the business in 1894 and after his retirement in 1935, Harry was the sole owner until 1931 when he handed the business over to his son Norman. The arrival of the University and Public Schools Brigade in September 1914 led to a vast number of photographs of Ashtead being taken and residents today are greatly indebted to Harry Johnson for the record he made at the time in his superb quality photographs.
