The original wartime gravesite of Prince Maurice of Battenberg, who was killed in action on October 27, 1914, during the First Battle of Ypres. He was a Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps and the youngest grandson of Queen Victoria.
Prince Maurice was the only member of the British royal family to be killed in active combat during World War I.
Location: He is buried in the Ypres Town Cemetery in Belgium.
Burial Wishes: Rejecting an offer from Lord Kitchener to repatriate her son's body to Britain, his mother Princess Beatrice requested that he remain laid to rest alongside his fallen comrades.
