Viola Mary Bawtree 1900Viola Bawtree was born on 13th July 1883 in Sutton Surrey. She was the youngest daughter of Alfred and Matilda Bawtree. Viola was an artistic, romantic young woman. She was deaf after suffering scarlet fever as a child. Although never going out to work and being very retiring Viola was passionate about gardening and the garden diaries she wrote for many years showed great sensitivity towards other people and a wonderful sense of humour. Viola died on 30th August 1973 aged 90 looking after her beloved garden for almost seventy years.
